The Day's End...

Something about a Sunset.
We watch them. Some drive out to a bluff, some walk to a shoreline, some sit in chairs or on a back porch swing. Some, during an evening barbecue, stop mid-conversation to watch the last rays of the day give way to brilliance.
Something so distant in our genetic history is echoed forward in a wordless, primordial response that it binds history to the moment.
The last light of the day. The last light gives way to splendor. Clouds left from a passing storm blends, bends, and offers itself as a canvas for the glorious event.
Our souls vibrate with the prehistoric memories of confused excitement, awe and momentary fear of light passing into darkness.
All those ancient cellular memories touch us in the moment and we rejoice for it heralds another day coming.  ~author unknown~

Exposed...

Okay, since when do elevators have hurricane-force blasts of air as one enters and exits?!  and are those stretched out underwear around her ankles?! Critey! This trollop is moments away from disease, pregnancy, or jail time, folks!

I guess we can all identify with feeling a little too exposed.  Here lately, I've felt a little more exposed than not.  Since my teen moved back in with her father, its been a rollercoaster of sorts.  I am still really hurt by this latest blow of hers that she was assaulted by me September 19th and she has stayed away since she moved back out there. Her behaviors are concerning especially this latest lie. She is damaged more than I ever realized, and years of therapy will not undo what he's done to her emotionally, her own father.

Looking back, she was always so scared of him, and why? I believe that emotionally she was stripped as a young child and brainwashed to believe I am the enemy, its sad...but true...I saw it. I felt powerless to stop it.   It came out in her behaviors, the impulsiveness, lack of empathy or regard for others, anger/temper outbursts, inattentiveness, poor school performance, inability to interact appropriately with same age peers, and even at 17, she still struggles with this.  Over the years, I've tried to love her best I could.  I gave her heart solace.  When she was with me she felt safe, rested, loved.  She wanted to be with me always, but she was scared of her father.  I could never calm her fears, and she would never leave him, he made sure of that.  I tried to tell her it would be okay, but it was never okay.  It would not have mattered if she lived with me, he would not have stopped his mind games.

Any man who stands in the face of a pregnant woman and tells her that "I wished you had had a God damn abortion" is no father capable of love.  My kids certainly had not felt it, nor did I.  Evil can only hide itself for so long.  He only wanted 'my baby' for one purpose...to torture me, but he didn't realize that by trying to do that, he would make her life a living hell and damage her. How does one profess to love a child more than life itself but continue to abuse them? He lost his power over me a long time ago. The least he could have done was truly love her, be the father she needed, I would have been okay with that, and let her feel loved by others.  Instead he isolated her, he worked on her psyche, abused her perhaps even sexually, and we (me and my family) became the enemy.   He tried to destroy all that she loved.  I learned how finally to let go of his abuse, it took several years even after the divorce, but I could never protect my child from it, and that folks, is a hard pill to swallow.

Why am I writing this...You should probably exit now...

He, at one point, even tried to take my parental rights away as her mother, making her write things on a piece of paper, stupid stuff like I had men over while she was there (I was in a long-term relationship of 9 years), and there was no food in the refrigerator, I can't remember what all there was...lies...things he made her write, she was only 10 years old.  She felt so removed from my life and she did not want to be. She saw I had a close relationship with my little granddaughter and she was jealous, she wanted that too. She needed that too. It makes me cry just to think what he has put her through.  Over that crap he pulled, I had counseling ordered through the courts for her.  I tried to empower her.  I remember that summer she wanted to live with us, and my husband at the time, she loved him.  He was the Dad, the loving Dad she needed, but she was not allowed to have love.  Her father made sure of that, as around Mother's Day, a weekend, I went to pick her up and her father told me that I needed to talk to my lawyer that she had a nasty bruise on her leg.  I was shocked...I knew Bobbi would never not want to come visit us.  What was he doing to my baby?

He got her a stepmother, and for the longest time, I hoped she was finally receiving some support, protection, and love from a mother figure when I couldn't be there.   Her Dad wanted me out of her life. If by doing so, it meant the psychological abuse would have stopped, I would have gladly stepped back but by that time the damage had already been done. I identified with the mother who told King Solomon to let the other woman take my child, rather than cause harm. However, I never took myself out of her life, every weekend she wanted to be with me and was, and I even encouraged Bobbi to develop a relationship with her stepmother. I would even call Sandy up on Mother's Day and thank her for being a mother to my baby, and being there when I couldn't... but I would learn later she let his abusive verbage continue.  Sandy called me several times over the years while married to him, stating she couldn't live with him anymore.  He was making her choose between her own family and him.   I wanted Sandy to help Bobbi, to help change the physical custody issue because Sandy knew what he was doing, but she stayed with him.  She turned her back on Bobbi as far as I'm concerned, and our communication ended, he made sure of that.  My daughter doesn't see her stepmother either anymore.  I understand why.

If my daughter doesn't feel me as her "safe zone" what will happen to her? Why would she outright lie and say her own mother assaulted her just a few weeks back?  She knows that's a lie.  She knows I would never harm her.   How do I protect myself from lies?  I am afraid that I'll end up in jail for something I know nothing of.  The extent of emotional damage I have seen in this child esp. over the last year and half is unnerving, and I am worried she is going to end up in some really bad trouble.  I fear for her. I love and miss her.   Here is a child who was bought and paid for in a custody battle, of which we had joint, but he got physical cause I had no place to live? no job? and he concocted a lie to get her, a lie that I abused her. Here is a man who should have never been allowed to spend a moment alone with her.  Here is a man who never once ever said he was sorry for absolutely anything he ever did or said, and trust me that was plenty.  I was never guilty of anything but loving my child.  There are abusers out there who don't deserve a child, even mothers; I was never one of those.

My baby turns 18 in less than six months.  Sadly, I will probably move away within a year. I can't see subjecting myself to ridiculous falsehoods and lies of abuse that never happened, and God knows what lie is coming next.  Its like she has lived in some evil cult of his for so long, I'm not sure there is an intervention for that.   She is definitely fueled by a father who is a sociopath and psychopath more than likely, and I'm afraid he has made a clone of himself.  I cannot protect myself from that, nor should I have to.  I have had enough. My baby knows where she is truly loved, and one day I'll help her pick up the pieces; one day when she finally feels safe enough, free enough, the day after she breaks into a million tiny pieces, all in the name of love.

How Is The Teen...

Since being removed from her dad's residence August 14th, 2008, how has she been doing? Well, today she actually got up and made it to the bus stop with my driving her for the first time! YAY! She has missed way too many days this year already, but even with excused absences her work has fallen behind in her classes as a Junior this year. She was off last week for fall break however didn't do much in the way of catching up over break as far as I could tell. She said that she was supposed to start back in those classes from the beginning starting with a change in her schedule at the counselor's office first thing this morning.

She is a little moody though, and at times a bit snappy. I see that perhaps she has bouts of overexcitedness with bouts of lethargy, so I'm wondering if perhaps there could a component of bipolar in here somewhere. Somewhere in the back of my mind it stays with me. I need to start recording her mood swings in order to really watch and see how she is functioning. She was prescribed meds a few weeks ago, but doesn't tolerate that well. I think it's time for a change. She wanted a job, and says she cannot function at a job if she is that sleepy, and I would tend to agree with that assessment. I don't know what the mental health people will think, but frankly she is more important, and of course her health is of the utmost importance, that includes both physically and mentally.

Her next appt should be coming up sometime this week with Dr. Fisher. I need to check that scheduled appt so we don't miss it.

No job yet. Only she reconnected with a few friends she had in fourth grade at Rose Hill Christian School, perhaps the reason for her upbeat mood at present, we'll see how well she maintains that mood and motivation this week, it's only Monday.

that's it for now.

"How Do I Deal with being the daughter of a rapist?"

I was told by my daughter's Social Worker today that my daughter's father was arrested. The charges involve rape and sodomy of a child age 12 or less, and more charges are pending. My first thought was Bobbi.

In order to spare her from hearing this at school or being text messaged inadvertently I decided to pick her up after school and tell her myself. I saw it on the 5 o'clock news today online, so did my friends. Bobbi Jo did not see it. I don't ever want her to see that if I can help it. How terribly sad for her, and for all of us really to have to live with this stigma. How dare him. It sickens me to my very core.

Her first reaction was one of anger, tears, wanting to know what exactly he was charged with, wanting to know which jail he was in, what would happen to the dog and even her hamster. I told her that surely there was someone taking care of that, probably Sandy, his newly divorced ex. She told me she knew he did it and he would go to prison and she would not have a Dad. It broke my heart.

This was my day. I haven't worked a full 8 hour day since Bobbi arrived here. She has needed my full attention. Tomorrow it is a call to the lawyer's office, trying to make sure Bobbi has some sort of future. Her stepmother called informed me that his bail was $200,000, who his attorney was, and that he would be arraigned tomorrow morning.

Troopers Arrest Man on Child Rape Charges

ASHLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) – A Catlettsburg man is under arrest on sexual abuse charges involving a child less than 12 years old.

Kentucky State Police arrested 52-year-old Bobby O**** at his home on Wednesday.

KSP say the charges involve two foster children who recently lived in his home.

O**** is charged with one count of rape and one count of sodomy. Investigators say more charges could be pending.

O**** is in the Boyd County Detention Center.

They even had his damned picture in there. Poor Bobbi.

People Often Ask...

How could you stay with someone like that? Wouldn't you know when you dated him that he just wasn't quite right?

I guess there were many reasons why we fall victim. We only look at the positive things, don't we? and ignore "bad" behaviors. He seemed to have it all; a loving family, 'things', and showered me and my two children with superficial affections. We had nothing. I would "date" him for years, not really knowing how psychologically impaired he truly was. He had many years before I came along at covering up, and I assume he got very good at it. I assumed he had been in prior relationships and hurt, so some things I let slide thinking them unimportant. My mom once said to me that leopards never change their spots, they just learn to camouflage better, and she was right.

Looking back, I figure his family was good at covering him up as well. I thought his mom and dad were good people. His dad worked for Ashland Oil, a big oil refinery, driving a truck for years. Their home was very nice. He lived with his parents, which I thought a little odd, but nobody seemed to mind, so I just accepted it as "normal?" They all seemed normal. I'm not so sure I knew what normal was, frankly. I was raised in an alcoholic household, with a father who abused my mother physically, however I don't remember that per se. I do remember walking on eggshells as a kid myself. I was glad to find a guy who did not drink and seemed genuinely interested in becoming a part of mine and my two children's lives at the time we needed support.

Were there signs of just how psycho he was? Yes, now that I look back at it. I do recall one particular incident while dating this guy wherein we went camping, and he got mad over something really insignificant and began screaming at my kids, ordering them to do something he wanted them to do, and then throwing stuff all around the campground. He was totally out of control, and I told him so. My kids were frightened and frankly so was I. I ordered him to take us all home at that point. He drove a van. On the way home, he would pass vehicles, driving erratically, and told me at one point, if I can't have you, nobody will ~ playing Russian Roulette at the wheel, jerking back over after passing cars and avoiding close encounters with oncoming cars. It was frightening. I don't know how long we had dated at that time, but I doubt if I spoke to him for a while afterwards.

I wanted nothing to do with that, however some time elapsed, he apologized for weeks and weeks on end, promised me the moon and stars I suppose, and even his mother called missing us. I would reluctantly give him another try, the biggest mistake of my life looking back. I didn't have a strong family bond or much of a relationship with my siblings, so him and his parents had become my family sort of. I fell victim to "having" instead of doing without. They showered us with things, things the kids needed. I was living in subsidized housing, taking classes, using Food Stamps and public assistance to get by. Instinctively, my children at first disliked him, kids have that sense about people don't they? Perhaps they tolerated him for me I suppose looking back at it now.

I often wonder where my life would have been should I have not traveled that road but instead chose a different path. All the pain and misery he has put us through, but that which I allowed him to do. He's sitting in that damn cell but I'm the guilty feeling one at this point.

A Glimpse Back...

The back of the house on the ridge was almost totally glass and when you looked out, it was a kaleidoscope of blue sky and green foliage. It was beautiful in all seasons, especially in autumn. I miss that view, but I do not miss the house whose walls bled from the emotional wounds. Every once in a while, a bird would hit the glass with a thud. Most times it would be dazed and after a bit would fly off once again. My last year in that house I spent in a daze, and like that bird, I wished I could just fly away.

In the spring of 1997, I would be visited by a song sparrow, which I believed to be an omen, looking back, a sign of worse things to come but I didn't know it at the time. It had been a particularly rough few months, years actually. Adding to my stressors of divorce was the recent loss of my father and the loss of my daughter to a foster care system.

I worked an evening shift job at a local hospital after x-ray school in 1989, working as an x-ray tech at the local VA. He worked nights, so he was there with them alone in the evenings. We were building a house which would not be done completely for a couple more years, it was not a turn-key job. We lived in that house without walls or floors for what seemed like forever. My son after school would have to help his stepfather for hours on end, and he would get cursed at and verbally abused more often than not. Most of the drywalling in that house was done by them.

My now ex at the time would call me sometimes at work furious, acting out on the phone, I worried about the kids. My daughter spent a lot of time at his mom's next door. I tried to get all of us into counseling so we could better merge as a family unit, but he wouldn't hear of it. I didn't realize what he was putting my kids through at home while I worked. I eventually quit that job, not because I didn't love it, but I suffered a back injury in 1991.

My relationship with my son the last two years of his high school became strained to almost silence, and when he graduated high school in 1992 he went directly into the Marine Corps. He just wanted to get as far away as he could, but would come back somewhat broken two years later, and once again to fall prey to my husband's manipulative control.

By fall 1996, my daughter began to take her hurt and anger out on me, and at times we physically would get into it. I hated that. Looking back, I hate that I let him destroy not only my spirit and that of my children, but more importantly, break the hearts of my children in the process by staying with him for far too long. Raising teens was hard enough without any type of dysfunction. Why couldn't he be the parent he should have been? Why couldn't I have been a better mother?

Not only was she taking out her hurt physically on me, but she began staying away from home as much as she could, cutting school, nothing outrageously bad; in actuality most of it was typical teenage behaviors but it could lead to drugs, unprotected sex, and who knows what else. I worried myself sick over it. My attempts to diffuse any situation failed. Her stepfather was the type who could never see past the end of his nose. Nobody else mattered. We lived a world according to "Bob." Yes, that was his name, to this day even typing it makes me want to vomit. His assault on her and me for that matter was unrelenting to the point she wanted to be taken out of the home. God knows I wanted her to have some peace. I wanted her to be in a loving environment, not one of cold stares and harsh words, so I as her parent reluctantly involved the courts at his urging, and let them place her in a foster home. Why didn't I just leave too?

He got what he wanted, her gone, me broken. Looking back I see his control over all of us. It's hard to see that when you are in the midst of it. Sleep became my only comfort. He had that dirty little secret and for a nearly two years he was working on destroying her, destroying any sense of family. I saw her go from a beautiful freshman girl to an unhappy depressed teen who stayed in her room, and gained 30 pounds. She broke silence one day blurting it out in desperation when him and her were into a confrontation; I remember him going up the stairs after her towards her room. Oh God, I didn't want to believe it. Since my youngest's birth in 1992 and my father coming to live with us in 1993, I had a 24/7 job, so I stayed home instead of working. I grew to loathe this man I had married.

How was I to know that this saga would not end with my divorcing him, but merely begin in another haunting form with my youngest, sweetest, innocent baby. This is the vulnerable heart behind The Sparrow's Song. It is true that we see only what we want to see, even to the point of trying to bury the truth from ourselves.

A New Chapter of The Sparrow's Song...

I have tried writing this story, but I found it too difficult to do at times. After all these years, it still brings me to tears. I erased it. I tried to erase a lot of things out of my memory, but some things just won't be. Funny how things nag at you for years, and compel you finally to confront and deal with them. For too long I ignored, ignored, ignored. I often ask myself why, why didn't I fight harder, be more resourceful, stop at nothing to ensure her emotional well being? I don't have an answer for that. I was beaten down. I was a coward.

Today, it was strange to be sitting in Dr. Fisher's office on the same couch I had sat nearly five years earlier, only the circumstances were now different. Back then, I had resigned myself to the fact that my baby girl had a new stepmother who would love and protect her when I couldn't due to the fact that her father was controlling and manipulative. I would have to concede for her sake, as I always did, as he was hellbent on destroying any relationship I had with her. She was my baby. I was never the one who wanted to fight, but I knew he would crush her fragile tender heart, and continue his mindgames till he destroyed her psyche as well. I hoped that counseling would help us all, especially empower my own daughter when it came to her father.

At that particular juncture, five years, ago he had filed to take away my joint custodial rights as her parent, and for what reason? There was no credible reason, only the reasons he invented by having an angry child write out things on paper about her mother. This was a child who really wanted to be with her mother but was lashing out because of jealousy over a granddaughter whom I spent more time with than her because of the way things were. He had her write things like mom has men over at night (total lie) or there is no food in the refrigerator (another lie), and I think even something to the effect that I didn't even have a refrigerator, and a few more I can't recall at the moment, and had her do them in her own handwriting over & over until he got what he wanted, and took them into a lawyer's office? I know it's nuts ...He would continue to use this child as his weapon of hatred against me.

A couple of weeks ago, escorted by a State Trooper and a social worker, myself and my daughter entered his residence so she could get some of her things as she was going to live with me. The first thing out of his mouth was, "I don't want her in my home"... referring to me of course. I never realized how much this man absolutely hates me, obviously still does even though we had divorced 11 years earlier. As karma would have it, he sits now in jail awaiting trial in January 2009. Funny how things work out, huh?

I remember Dr. Fisher reciting the story of King Solomon and the two women who were fighting over a child, and he ordered the baby cut in half, but the real mother said, "No, let her take the child." ... which I did, not that I didn't see her anymore, but somebody else knew what he was doing and through counseling I learned to let go and free myself of his manipulation. Yes, I will never comprehend why he would inflict such emotional damage upon this child at such a young age, or fathom why he would continue to do so even with my attempts at empowering all of us through counseling. Presently, my daughter and I are back in counseling having to deal with past haunts as they come up, as well as cope with issues in the here and now.

One good thing is that at this time, his reign of terror is over, and a new chapter has begun. I always told him he might win the battles, but I would eventually win the war. Love is always stronger than hate. My daughter is finally home with her mother where she has belonged all these years. In the words of my eldest son, "it's about time, Mom." The Sparrow's Song is a true story of actual facts & events from the past, and the present, and hopefully by writing about it I can close the door to my past and embrace the future with my baby girl; our family now complete.
