Over It...

not sure how I felt about it coming, somewhat dreading it, and glad its gone.  Only good thing about it is that kiddo got to visit me for 3 days. We had a good time despite the fact that other family members chose to keep their distance.  Shame that family members can be so cruel at Christmastime. She did not get to see my daughters kids or even her brother but she handled herself with grace.  I was proud of her.

Nerdy Xmas

He sat rigid and helpless while she gave him the ultimate punishment. She talked all through the Doctor Who Christmas episode.

"I've been a VERY naughty girl!" she whispered, slowly raising her skirt and bending over his knee. "I deserve to be punished!" "OK," he said, and invited his mother to stay for Christmas.

He lay helpless on the floor, his hands tied behind his back and his mouth covered with tape. He may be a genius but he was terrible at wrapping Christmas presents.

where did the weekend go?

time sure flies whether you are laying on your duff or up running around. Sunday evenings always come too soon and Mondays and back to the grind is just beyond the horizon. I didn't accomplish much this weekend. I have to say outside of doing a couple of laundry loads and dishes, I laid around watching Netflix. Finished the Godless series that was good and now I'm watching Peaky Blinders, its pretty good. Seen it? if not, here's a review...its not new, but I haven't seen it.

Peaky Blinders s1e1
Thomas Shelby (Cillian Murphy) rides into the opening of the Netflix Original Series Peaky Blinders (2013-?) on horseback. He is the protagonist, hero, and villain of this tale. The unofficial head of a criminal family who likes to cultivate a Stoic image, with a suggestion of Robin Hood, which the impoverished folk of 1919 Birmingham, England seem to admire and fear. Thomas’ gang, the Peaky Blinders, run this section of town – offering “protection” to those with the means to pay and keeping a kind of order – but Thomas wants more.

Enter our antagonist, Inspector Chester Campbell (Sam Neill), riding to his new assignment in a train. He is the no-nonsense copper transferred from the fight against the IRA in Belfast to this English slum on a special mission to recover a shipment of weapons that have gone missing. Neill plays a good prick, the kind of self-righteous establishment man who gives the establishment a bad name, just as Murphy plays a solid bad-boy (the kind that women want to imagine themselves with because they know they shouldn’t and men want to be but know they don’t have what it take). There is a cliche and predictable quality to Peaky Blinders that is a bit off-putting. From Thomas’ childhood friend, Freddie Thorne (Iddo Goldberg), who saved his life during The Great War (aka, World War I) to the attractive and mysterious bar maiden, Grace Burgess (Annabelle Wallis), who is really an undercover police agent, the term, “formulaic” comes to mind again and again.

Freddie has become a communist since they returned from the front and he is secretly sleeping with Thomas’ sister Ada (Sophie Rundle), while causing trouble with local workers. He comes right out and says that Thomas will probably have to kill him someday and it makes you wonder, “How many episodes until that happens?” Meanwhile, Grace, despite her mission to help find the missing weapons, clearly likes Thomas. You can almost picture the meeting where the show was pitched, “We’ll have a love interest, who he can’t get with, because she’s really a cop; a bad cop that you’ll love to hate; good criminals, who you’ll root for in spite of their crimes; and a communist boyhood friend. It’s 1919, they just had the Russian Revolution, we’ve got to have a communist. They even throw in a young Winston Churchill (Andy Nyman) and a wise old Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory) who tries to control Thomas but ends up falling for his charm, and there will be PTSD nightmare that keep Thomas awake at night.” There’s nothing subtle and little that feels original about it.

Now, on the other hand, the show has its good qualities. As a period piece it is very believable looking and the acting is good. Cliche as they might be, it’s hard not to care about the characters, at least some of them, and it’s really hard not to root for Thomas. The one unusual aspect to Peaky Blinders is the music, which you will probably love, or find it very off-putting, depending on your tastes. The production is trying to be a hip, twenty-first century show, and opening song, “Red right hand,” by Nick Cave, along with several other hard-hitting, fast past numbers from other cool artists, makes it clear that this is not a faithful depiction of the time in which it pretends to take place.

All in all, Peaky Blinders is worth a peek and once you’re inside you probably won’t want to leave.

Yep, once you start it you'll have to finish it...just like Godless! :)

Starlings...

Wow this video is incredible! watching and hearing these starlings... just fascinating!

Synopsis
The art of flying is a short film about “murmurations”: the mysterious flights of the Common Starling. It is still unknown how the thousands of birds are able to fly in such dense swarms without colliding. Every night the starlings gather at dusk to perform their stunning air show. Because of the relatively warm winter of 2014/2015, the starlings stayed in the Netherlands instead of migrating southwards. This gave filmmaker Jan van IJken the opportunity to film one of the most spectacular and amazing natural phenomena on earth.

some days its harder than others to feel alone ... its so quiet here I could hear a pin drop ... even the cat is nowhere around and she slept with me half the afternoon! I thought I had plans today with someone but that obviously fell through without even so much as a phone call.  Makes me wonder if some emergency came up but that doesn't excuse bad manners, does it?

... just my imagination...
