wave riding...

The ocean flows by timeless;
Without any end, without any beginning.
Always watching, always waiting.
Its ever changing moods passing swiftly,
Calm and then raging,
Both flirting across the space of a minute.

Mirroring ages, people and time;
A lifetime of a person, whether high or low,
Makes no dent in that wide space of nothingness
with the deep wisdom of forever.
Laws, acts, years and eras;
Come and then go, without record.

Our loves and losses are not noticed when measured
against the vastness of its depths.
Unconquerable, unfathomable it flows;
A teardrops length from hell and a raindrops width from heaven.
how little our desires; how worthless our dreams.
For we are gone in but a second;
The oceans flow on regardless.

A Great American Band...Two For Tuesday...

I was a rock and roller of the 1970s, and there were some great bands, including Grand Funk who was always a personal fav of mine. I bet some of you didn't know that they donated two New York concert proceeds to a drug program treatment center in the 70s called The Phoenix House. There is a little bit of that interview in this video. The other video is strictly All Grand Funk. Mark Farner's musical diversity is a matter of public record; his voice legendary and one of the best rock voices ever, well in my opinion anyway. Did you know that Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home" as one of the top ten classic songs of all time? Yeah, me either, I just know I really liked it, and loved this great American Band of the 70s, enjoy!

I dare you not to listen and sing it outloud! If you're like me, you'll probably go looking for some more of their videos to watch and sing to, like Locomotion and We're An American Band, Rock N Roll Soul, dang, there were some great songs! Forming in late 1968, Grand Funk was the first American rock band to obtain 10 consecutive platinum albums, and had many top 40 singles with two #1 singles. You couldn't listen to the radio and NOT hear their songs. Who remembers the 1973 #1 hit, “We’re An American Band”, huh? Dang I sure do. This song expresses the life of a rock band on the road and made them the quintessential American Band.

Born as a garage band from the industrial city of Flint, Michigan, they rose to fame quickly because their music and persona spoke to the soul of the people. I love that statement about them, which is the gospel truth. The average folk loved 'em. They gave other bands inspiration and always with the Grand Funk style they never let us 70s rock and rollers down. Among the band’s many sold out concerts were that of a show in 1971 at Shea Stadium that sold out in 72 hours...it took the much higher hyped Beatles 7 weeks to sell out the same venue 7 years earlier.

Based on the contributions guitarist, Mark Farner, drummer, Don Brewer, bassist, Mel Schacher and the later added orgainist, Craig Frost made to the history of rock n roll, Grand Funk Railroad should be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame. I for one, cannot believe that such a great American band has not been inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, or at least I couldn't find it to be a truth. If you think this band should be inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame (hell yeah!) then be a part of history and make it happen.

and how's this for an encore from Don Brewer?! ha! and you thought this was two for Tuesday! suuuprise, suuuprise as Gomer would say...

Rainy Day Tunes...

I love instrumentals, and I can't get this tune, "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" out of my mind for some reason~ and I wished this Eddie Rabbit song, "I Love A Rainy Night" would stop playing through my head too! LOL Blame it on this rainy weather, and the fact that I was actually making a new pinkpod of "Rainy Day Tunes"

How many of you like the Allman Brothers?  Here's a bio piece out of Rollin' Stone about this band...

The Allman Brothers Band blended strains of Southern music — blues, R&B, country, jazz, and gospel — into a flexible, jam-oriented style that reflected the emergence of the "New South" and set the style for Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Marshall Tucker Band, and countless other Southern rockers. Oddly — or eerily, some would say — the band's unusual string of untimely deaths has been repeated in other Southern-rock bands.

Through personal tragedy and turmoil, the Allman Brothers Band has endured and, though lacking the commercial clout of its early-'70s heyday, the band remains highly respected and well received by legions of fans.  To continue reading their bio

Some think the Allman Brothers were the best "live band" ever. They toured relentlessly and certainly were not without their highs and lows. One of their lowest blows being the death of Duane Allman in October 1971.  While riding his motorcycle in Macon, Duane swerved to avoid a truck and lost control of the bike. He died as a result of his injuries. Then even before the band members had a chance to fully recover from this shock, bass guitarist Berry Oakley was also killed in a motorcycle accident on November 1972. Strangely enough, this second accident occurred less than a mile from the scene of Duane's death. Although the surviving members decided to continue with new musicians, many of their fans feared that the original spirit of the band had been lost.

They would have falling outs and reunite several times. I was kind of shocked when Cher and Greg Allman got married because they certainly did not seem compatible to me, did they you? but it was short-lived for 4 years I think. Together they became the parents of a son, Elijah Blue Allman, who later formed his own band, Deadsy. Then there was the drug scandal with their manager. Yep, I guess no band is without their break-ups, drugs, and tumultuous affairs.  Anyway, enjoy the video.

Supposedly there was an affair going on I believe was it Dickey Betts? with a married woman ... some think might have been Boz Scagg's wife? and this particular piece was written with her in mind...but who really knows the story behind this great instrumental piece, bloggers?

Is it a rainy in your neck of the woods today, too?

What Am I Listening To?

Earlier I was surfing and I came across a post that brought an Alicia Keys song to mind, so my mind drifted in that direction for a while, and while out cruising through videos of hers, I came across a video that she and Jack White did for a movie...so needless to say...it threw me in Jack's path.

To admire his guitar talents, one would have to

but who could resist not watching the whole Ball and Biscuit~which is one of my Jack favs...

gotta love Jack.

BTW, Here's a trivia question for ya. Rolling Stones ranked and placed Jack on their "100 Greatest Guitarists" of all time. Go ahead, without looking it up, and guess where he ranked.
